| After graduating from Oriel College, Oxford. I started my professional life as a business journalist in the property and construction press and enjoyed an award-winning seven years as a reporter, features editor and then managing editor at the Builder Group and Reed Business Publishing. I was then appointed editor of a financial magazine at EMAP. On the face of it, this was not the greatest career move of all time, as I started work on October 19 1987- otherwise known as Black Monday, when global stock markets went into freefall. The magazine closed shortly afterwards and I took up a role as Business Development Manager focussing on new launches and acquisitions. Although this signalled the end of my career as a full-time business journalist I still research and write special reports for international publications including Fortune and National Geographic. In 1990 I moved to The Economist Group as International Business Development Director, again responsible for identifying launches and acquisitions in the UK, but also in Central & Western Europe, the Americas and the Middle East. I undertook commercial due diligence and project managed the integration of both new start-ups and acquired businesses into the Group. My tenure coincided with the explosion of email and internet into common usage and I have been closely involved with the digital development of both B2B and general business publishing - and beyond - ever since. In 1999 I set up as an independent consultant and have established a reputation as digital strategist and change manager. I have not just advised on but also project managed the implementation of new strategies based on technological innovation as well as post-acquisition integration.
